Energy optimisation at DMT ENCOS: Reducing operating costs with innovative solutions

Innovative solutions for energy optimisation
In recent years, the development of innovative solutions for energy optimisation and increasing energy efficiency has become increasingly important within our portfolio. One example of this is an energy efficiency project in which heat recovery in a stripping plant successfully reduced steam and cooling water consumption, leading to considerable savings in energy costs.
Customer / Problem
A chemical customer that produces organic and inorganic chemicals at one of its sites was faced with the challenge that the existing supply systems were reaching their capacity limits for the planned capacity expansion of a process plant. Due to the inadequate steam and cooling water supply, a costly expansion of the corresponding systems was imminent. The aim was to avoid this expansion and at the same time reduce cooling water and steam consumption by optimising the process in order to minimise energy costs.
Process engineering solution
In the plant in question, a solvent was originally separated from a product stream using steam. The vapours were then condensed with cooling water and the concentrated solvent was fed back into the process. In order to optimise energy efficiency, DMT ENCOS developed a solution in which the condensation heat of the vapours is used to generate steam. The vapours are fed into a plate heat exchanger for condensation and the vapour generated is reused as stripping vapour with the help of ejectors. This largely saves the cooling water originally required. In addition, the use of the natural circulation principle made a feed pump superfluous, which enabled additional energy savings.
Project management
DMT ENCOS developed and implemented this project in close coordination with the customer through all typical project phases. In addition to the development of the process engineering concept, including the necessary process simulations, the basic and detailed engineering was carried out. As part of the approval-relevant engineering, the documents required to apply for licences were prepared. The customer was supported during the procurement process by the development of tender documents and the evaluation of offers. Finally, the execution and commissioning of the plant modifications was supported by construction management tasks and updating the documentation. The cost and schedule targets developed together with the client were secured by qualified project management.

For the customer, the implementation of this energy optimisation project primarily meant avoiding the costly expansion of the steam and cooling water supply systems. In addition to the avoided investment costs, there are also ongoing savings:
