Thermal separation technology at DMT ENCOS: Expertise in process separation columns

Thermal separation technology is one of the core competences in the DMT ENCOS portfolio, in particular the engineering of the entire range of process separation columns. These columns are crucial for the efficient separation of mixtures of substances and the production of high-purity products.

What do we mean by columns?

Columns are essential components in the process engineering industry that are used to separate mixtures of substances. They can be roughly divided into the following categories:

  • Distillation columns: Separation of liquid mixtures by heating and condensation.
  • Washing/absorption columns: Removal of impurities from gases by absorption in liquids.
  • Stripping/desorption columns: Removal of dissolved substances from liquids by adding gas.
  • Drying columns: Removal of moisture from materials.

Separation wall columns are also part of our portfolio and are high-performance columns that are used for the production of high-purity products with optimised energy efficiency. The process engineering requirements generally focus on

  • Reinterpretation: Adaptation of existing processes to improve efficiency.
  • Debottlenecking: Elimination of bottlenecks to increase capacity.
  • Revamp: Modernisation of existing systems to increase performance.
  • Energetic optimisation: Targeted optimisation or redesign of distillation processes for the separation of multi-component mixtures.

DMT ENCOS offers a comprehensive range of services for EPCM (Engineering, Procurement, Construction Management) projects. Our previous highlights include:

  • Thermodynamic and hydrodynamic simulations: Simulations of columns, peripherals and processes, also dynamic if required, to maximise efficiency and performance.
  • Column simulation: Optionally based on separation stages or mass transfer to develop the best separation solutions.
  • Selection and specification: Process engineering specification of columns, column internals and equipment as well as machinery of the required peripherals, including reboiler, condenser, preheater, flash drums, OvHD drum, pump and reflux splitter.
  • Static design: Static design of the equipment including the necessary strength calculations and stability checks to ensure safety and reliability.
